My first teaching position came as a result of a one-semester leave of absence granted to an eighth-grade history teacher. I took over at the beginning of the second semester, and I can still, after forty-three years, remember walking into my classroom on the second floor of that junior/senior high school in Pennsylvania. I was excited, yet anxious, and I can remember sitting at the small desk in our dining room, pondering lesson plans for the first few days and weeks with those eighth graders. I had done my student teaching in that school with seventh graders the year before, and I recognized many names as I pored over the class rosters prior to my debut.
