In the first chapter, we examined formative assessment in a traditional classroom. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate how technology can be used in a meaningful, sustainable, and scalable way to enhance formative assessment. The seminal work of Black and Wiliam (1998), as well as the continued research and writing of Corwin author Larry Ainsworth, demonstrates the impact of formative assessment on student achievement. Ainsworth (2015) describes how formative is not about gathering information for letter grades, but instead, “these assessments for learning yield diagnostic student feedback that educators use solely to inform and adjust instruction” (p. 33).
