Chapter 13: Improving Mental Health
Given the recorded successes in improving children’s mental health with Forest School sessions (for example, Acton & Carter, 2016; Box, 2015; Roe et al., 2008), it is not surprising that some practitioners are now offering Forest School to adults with mental health issues. As there has been more research done on the effects of nature on adults than on children, this offers opportunities as well as challenges to the Forest School community – opportunities to use existing research to interrogate and analyse Forest School practice and challenges in the magnitude of the tasks some practitioners are proposing to accept and the ethical dimensions involved.
