Another myth concerning eating disorders is that all male sufferers are homosexual. This idea has caused many heterosexual sufferers to avoid treatment in case they are considered gay. However, although gay men do seem to have an increased risk of developing an eating disorder, statistics show that only 20% of male sufferers are homosexual.
As mentioned previously, studies of male anorexics have shown that many sufferers lack assertive masculinity. They seem to exhibit more feminine qualities such as sensitivity, guilt, sadness and be more emotionally expressive. This may be due to a strong female role model in their life and does not automatically mean that they are or will become homosexual.
