According to Kerckhoff (1964), family life education arose around the turn of the century in response to social and cultural “upheavals” that were perceived to have a negative impact on individuals and families. These changes (e.g., industrialization and urbanization, the changing roles of women, changes in social institutions and in occupational and economic behaviors) resulted in an apparent loss of social control, and in particular, parents and other adults “seemed unable … to obtain the same socialized behavior from children as had previously been possible” (Kerckhoff, 1964, p. 881).
