“Marriage is the first bond of society,” declared Roman statesman and orator Marcus Tullius Cicero in 78 BCE (De Officiis, I, 78 BCE cited in Popenoe, 2001). Since this ancient pronouncement, much scientific data have emerged on just how important marriage is. Recent scholarly summaries have detailed the various social, physical, sexual, and economic benefits of happy marriage to the couple themselves, to the children raised within these unions, and to the broader society (Institute for American Values, 2011; Waite & Gallagher, 2000).
