This article identifies emerging trends of popular protests in China. It evaluates their potential impacts on China’s state–society relations and regime transformation. As China develops into the world’s premier manufacturer and trader, its decades-long transformation has manifested a disturbing series of social problems, including underpayment of wages and pensions, rampant corruption and government malpractices, unjust land seizures and displacement, surging living and housing costs, and deteriorating environmental conditions. These social problems have all fueled widespread resistance, and even turned into collective confrontational protests demanding immediate corresponding justice be placed on the agenda.
