There is no end to the fascination generated by secret societies, like the Freemasons, drug cartels or spy networks. Such outfits provide material for journalistic exposes, as well as for rumour, paranoia and, above all, conspiracy theories. ‘Straight’ organizations, on the other hand, as reported in the financial pages of newspapers or through advertisements of products, have a far less intriguing image - at least to outsiders. To many insiders, however, every organization has its own secret society or societies, where important decisions are taken.
