This chapter will provide a brief introduction to becoming a critical reader of quantitative educational research evidence. In the first part of the chapter, attention will focus on: what is meant by an ‘effect size’; how effect sizes are calculated; and how to interpret the ‘size’ of an effect size. The chapter will then go on to examine meta-analyses and their limitations. Following on, the chapter will focus on correlation and how this is often confused with cause and effect.
