This chapter aims first to examine the nature of various sources of evidence – be it scientific research, school data, practitioner expertise and views of stakeholders. This will be followed by a discussion of the difference between tacit and explicit knowledge. Next, the chapter explores the challenges associated with the use of the best available evidence and what criteria might be used to help identify that evidence. This in turn will lead to a discussion of how to develop an evidence search strategy for all four sources of evidence, followed by a brief examination of how to distinguish between ‘good, bad and ugly evidence’ found on the Internet.
