Clinical experience and preliminary empirical evidence suggest that the personal and professional attributes of clinicians affect the technical and interpersonal aspects of care. The technical aspect of care refers to the services provided by the clinician to produce the desired outcomes. The interpersonal aspect of care refers to the way clinicians relate to patients. The technical and interpersonal aspects of care have a direct impact on outcomes of care. Similarly, the physical and psychosocial characteristics of the setting in which the health care situation takes place influence the nature of and the method for delivering health services, which, in turn, affect outcomes of care (Donabedian, 1980; Tarlov et al., 1989).
