The authors of this innovative book offer a comprehensive perspective on nursing intervention together with theory-driven guidelines for future study. They provide a clear explanation of the problems encountered in outcomes and intervention research and then proceed, via the Intervention Theory, to show how these studies can be undertaken reasonably and comprehensively.
Outcomes Research
Outcomes Research
Outcomes research refers to studies focusing on assessing the consequences of an intervention or program. Knowledge of which intervention is effective in producing desired outcomes assists clinicians in judging the value of various treatment modalities, in selecting appropriate interventions that best meet the clients' needs, and in using scarce resources efficiently (Ellwood, 1988; Mariner, 1994; Moritz, 1995). Development of outcomes-related knowledge requires a systematic approach to evaluating intervention effectiveness in achieving the desired changes. The conventional true experimental design is considered the standard approach for intervention effectiveness research. This chapter describes this conventional approach. Its strengths and limitations are discussed. The theory-driven approach to evaluation is introduced as a strategy to overcome the limitations of the conventional approach.
