The aim of this chapter is to explore the challenges that are likely to confront the EU and its member states in their relations with eastern Europe over the next decade. The chapter begins with an overview of the now very different regions into which Eastern Europe has evolved, and then goes on to examine the preoccupations and capacities of the main western actors that are relevant to developments in the east.
