Rights can be thought about at various levels ranging from those which require legislation to the rather more everyday presumption that we are all entitled to act as we choose. Rights are perhaps best thought of as justifiable claims, legal or moral, that individuals can make upon others or upon society. Legal rights are claims which are justified by recourse to the law, whereas moral rights are claims that are justified in terms of moral principles and rules (Beauchamp and Childress, 2001: 357).
