Many management students associate ‘case studies’ with hours spent arguing over such epics as The Cola Wars and How Chrysler Corp Came Back From the Dead. Apart from their well-known teaching uses, case studies are also widely used for management research. Here, however, the track record is less consistently favourable, and case study research is sometimes criticized as being comparatively weak. Much of this criticism is related to variability in the nature of scholars’ claims that their research is ‘case study-based’.
