Laddering is an in-depth, probing interview technique, so called because it forces the respondent up a ladder of abstraction, linking relatively concrete meanings at an attribute level with abstract meanings of more pervasive existential importance. It is based on the concept of ordination, that is, the hierarchical organization of personal constructions ranging from the peripheral to more central dimensions of meaning.
