This volume brings together some of the best writing published in the journal Management Learning since its re-launch under this title in 1994. The selection very much reflects the mission of the journal to act as a showcase for innovative, international and interdisciplinary work which covers a wide gamut of issues connected to management, organizations, learning and knowledge. Many authors have tried to define and describe the learning organization, as if the idea was homogeneous. However, no one seems to have succeeded with that task. Authors point out that confusion still exists about the concept (e.g. Burgoyne, 1999). Others use the terms ‘organizational learning’ and ‘learning organization’ interchangeably (e.g. Fulmer et al., 1998; Klimecki and Lassleben, 1998; Preskill and Torres, 1999). Many authors emphasize the difficulty, or even the impossibility, of describing what a complete learning organization looks like (e.g. Marquardt and Reynolds, 1994: 109; Pedler and Aspinwall, 1998: 2; Swieringa and Wierdsma, 1992: 72; Watkins and Marsick, 1993: xxii).
