This cultural practice is concerned with the design of landscapes and of landscape structures. It was originally associated with English and North American landscape gardeners after the middle of the 18th century including Humphrey Repton who used the term ‘landscape gardener’ in 1794. The term landscape architecture was invented in 1828 so that in the 19th century the term landscape gardener came to be associated with those who build and may design landscapes, whereas landscape architect came to be associated with those who design and may build landscapes.
