Global Conventions and Treaties
A number of global conventions and treaties have taken place over the last several decades (Table 52). A recent example is the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is an amendment to the international treaty on climate change. The protocol assigns mandatory targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to nations which have signed on. The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement made under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Countries that ratify this protocol commit to reducing their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases, or engaging in emissions trading if they maintain or increase emissions of these gases.
