Place, Sense of
The word is used to refer to the particular part of space occupied by organisms or possessing physical environmental characteristics. Places are located within the spheres in the envelope from about 200 km above the Earth's surface to the centre of the Earth and are not exclusive to any one discipline. Ecology, geology, physical geography, other environmental sciences and landscape architecture focus upon place, each using their own terms and approach. Each discipline has terms for the basic atoms of the environment studied, often for the units which are basic to mapping schemes.
