This chapter takes the raw ideas presented in Chapters 2 to 4 and examines them in terms of the literature on entrepreneurship. As will become clear, most of the traditional approaches to studying entrepreneurship offer an incomplete explanation of initiative within the large MNC. Thus the objective here is both to identify the areas where theory falls short, and to put forward an alternative perspective that better captures the empirical reality. The chapter is in two main parts. In the first part the various theories are reviewed. In the second part a number of new ideas are discussed.
