Deception is ubiquitous. Humans dissemble about everything, from whether they are irritated with their partner, to how qualified they are for a job, to their intentions to exercise. When construed broadly to include not just bald-faced lies but also omissions, equivocations, hedges, and the like, deception occurs in one-third or more of all conversations, with people averaging two lies per day (DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996). This state of affairs stands in contrast to the presumption in most encounters that others will be truthful (Grice, 1989). Deception, then, shadows every walk of social life, and with important consequences.
