Introduction
Environmental history is the exploration of past dynamics between two entities, that is, human society and the natural environment. This study covers a longue duree of transformations that took place from the post-Pleistocene period through early state societies to late colonial period. The exploration into pasts is based on themes and temporal frames to examine human alteration in ecology and natural environment, and development of human modes of subsistence from hunting and gathering, foraging, settled Neolithic man to urban state systems.
