The research method and strategy employed in this book principally follows a qualitative case study approach. Yin describes the case study approach as an empirical enquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within a real-life context, when there is a blurring between phenomenon and context, where multiple sources of evidence are used (Yin, 1994). Stoecker (1991: 97–8) defines a case study as ‘those research projects which attempt to explain holistically the dynamics of a certain historical period of a particular social unit’.
