Enhancing motivation is one of the greatest challenges in the classroom. Many children, particularly in secondary school, are so poorly motivated that trying to engage them in learning can be a disheartening experience. There are many factors that teachers have to compete with: a history of negative learning experiences, poor support and encouragement from home or the lure of more immediate pleasures amongst others. Many young people are disaffected with education and have to meet their needs for self-esteem and excitement outside the school.
