This chapter presents selected results of a parallel study of expectations of school leadership in twelve schools in Queensland, Australia. It does so against a backdrop of economic and political circumstances which bear great similarity to those which have influenced education policy in England, Scotland, Denmark and other western economies in recent years. Rightist post-welfarist policies have had political primacy in Australia, irrespective of the party platform of the government in power, whilst rationalist, free-market policies have held economic sway, again irrespective of changes in government (Yeatman, 1993).
