Introduction

What did it feel like to be a school leader in the mid 1990s? This was the question we put to school leaders and authority representatives at a joint conference held at the very start of the project. It enabled us to begin to identify what school leaders felt was important in their experience and map out some of the territory which we were to explore together over the next two years.

The Project Themes

The themes which we explore in this chapter are the leadership themes most consistently identified by school leaders themselves over the life of the two year project. The themes emerging most strongly from headteachers who participated in the study were these:
