Introduction
This chapter argues that institutional transformation theory, which integrates psychodynamic and social systems theory, is particularly relevant to the management of schools and can add an important dimension to educational management theory. The validity of the psychodynamic perspective on educational management is based on some simple propositions. First, educational institutions are locales for high levels of difficult emotions, especially anxiety. Secondly, educational institutions and the individuals within them will seek to defend themselves from these emotions and these defences will be reflected in their enculturation processes. Thirdly, the management of schools, particularly the management of their radical change, cannot be understood without a grasp of the underlying psychodynamic forces.
