The Genesis of this Volume
This book is one of the major outcomes of the Seminar Series funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) from 1997 to 1999 (R45126449596). The other main publishing venture arising from the Series is a special edition (Vol. 27, No. 3) of Educational Management and Administration, the leading UK-based journal in this field. The Series proposal arose from discussions between two of the editors (Tony Bush and Ray Bolam) about the need for a review of the academic discipline of educational management in the light of the momentous changes in policy and practice during the 1980s and 1990s.
