Teachers play a central part in ‘New’ Labour's strategy of raising standards in education as part of the creation of a prosperous and inclusive society. This chapter begins by considering the work of teachers and noting that, far from being a homogeneous group, they vary greatly in terms of what their daily work entails and how they respond to it. This leads us to a consideration of the complexity of teacher professionalism. A history of recent changes in teaching then charts the increasing centralization of the curriculum, the development of markets in education and the corresponding development of managerial forms of control.
