Education for Citizenship
Education for citizenship

This chapter seeks to explore the nature of education for citizenship. It begins by outlining a framework of the traditions that have influenced the development of modern citizenship before drawing upon a range of theoretical models to present an analysis of recent educational policy in Britain. The analysis is contextualized alongside the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which raises critical issues regarding the suitability of different models relating to children's rights to particular freedoms. The chapter closes with discussion of how these rights are to be found in relation to contemporary models of citizenship, and suggests how they might best be recognized so as to empower rather than constrain young people.
