Differentiation of schooling and pedagogy

This chapter examines the structural and pedagogical manifestations of differentiation primarily within the UK context. Differentiation developed as a new educational construct in pedagogical terms during the 1990s. However, the division of pupils and students within education systems is as old as the hills and is highly politicized. Discussions about equality of opportunity and comprehensive schooling have been replaced by an agenda which emphasizes ‘diversity’ and ‘choice’ within education.


It is becoming possible for each child to be educated in a way and at a pace which suits them, recognising that each is different, with different abilities, interests and needs (DfES, 2001: 20).
