Chapter 2 of this book addressed the ever faster and increasingly long-distance circulation of subjects and objects in postmodern political economies. In this context we emphasized the increasing emptying out of meaning, the flattening of subjects as well as objects, of goods, work, communications and symbols. Chapter 3 addressed what was identified as a counterposed tendency, that is a growing reflexivity, a growing freeing of individuals from social structures so that they could reflect upon, and in a transmogrified form once more find meaning in, the various spheres of social life.
