In Economic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb Fitzgerald and Leigh answer the need for a text that incorporates social justice and sustainability into how we think about and practice economic development. It is one of the first to talk about how revitalization strategies are implemented in both cities and suburbs, particularly inner-ring suburbs that are experiencing decline previously associated only with inner-city neighborhoods. Our first goal in writing this book is to examine how economic and social equity and environmental sustainability can be built into common economic development strategies. We identified three principles that underpin an economic development practice focused on economic equity and sustainability: increasing standards of living, reducing inequality, and promoting and encouraging sustainable resource use and production. To incorporate these principles into practice, we proposed an alternative definition of economic development to that of the conventional business interest-driven and wealth-creation approach currently dominating the field.
