What is ‘Inter-Professional Practice’?
The relatively new concept of inter-professional practice is complex and fraught with difficulty. One difficulty arises from, or is perhaps caused by, the language used to describe such practice. The list of terms includes:
- multi-professional/disciplinary
- inter-professional/disciplinary
- trans-professional/disciplinary
- integrated services
- multi-agency
- partnership working
- collaborative practice.
This is not an exhaustive list and you can no doubt add to it but it does provide a sense of the multiplicity of terms that can cause some confusion. It is helpful to define and consider the first three prefixes - ‘multi’, ‘inter’ and ‘trans’ - as a means to explore the meaning and purpose of the practice.
