Why do children give up painting and drawing when they draw with so much enthusiasm when they are very young? Our genetic inheritance certainly has strong effects, but we know that, even from the infant's intra-uterine experience, the environment and the opportunities it offers are crucial in the way the system develops (Eliot, 1999).
