To provide a context for the poetry classroom of the twenty-first century we need to look back some 40 years, to the beginning of the 1960s. In that decade a number of the poets, teachers and educationists were gaining recognition for their work which would help to shape the kind of poetry teaching familiar in UK classrooms today.
