As school administrators, we have both experienced the emotions and challenges connected with students making poor decisions that result in school discipline/consequences. We have also experienced the pushback from teachers, parents, and district leadership that comes with not following a black-and-white handbook approach to discipline (Cautionary note: We are not saying a district should not have general disciplinary guidelines to follow; we are saying the handbook should be updated to include a comprehensive response to student behavior, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach).
