In academic work it has long been thought that space, how we design spaces, like urban parks, school rooms, town-centres, shops, and so on, tells us something about our ideas, values and priorities. This work crosses many academic fields, such as anthropology, cultural studies and critical theory. In social semiotics, space design is mentioned in the classical work of Hodge and Kress (1988), Kress and van Leeuwen (1996) and van Leeuwen (2005).
