Introduction
The aim of carrying out research on photographs, in social semiotic terms, is to find out what ideas, values and identities they represent, and therefore ultimately how they represent the world and for what purpose. We present a tool kit for describing and analysing the contents of photographs in order to answer such research questions. We show how we can best analyse things like the settings, people, objects, activities and perspectives employed. Such tools allow us to reveal how the world is being shaped for us in any particular image or set of images.
