A Matter of Balance

If we had to use one word to describe our desire for students in their use of technology, it is balance. We want them to cultivate balance as kids so that they might carry that sense of balance forward into their adult lives. Balance implies that multiple perspectives need to be synthesized into an integrated view of community. That is exactly what we want our students to do.

The subtext of ISTE refreshed Standard 4 is that it asks teachers to balance—and help their students balance—many things:

  • Opportunity as well as responsibility
  • Excitement and empowerment as well as caution and consideration
  • Personal fulfillment as well as community and global well-being
