Stages of a Writer

Teachers observe authors as they evolve through developmental writing stages over time. Individual students may go through all the stages, or they may skip a stage. The stages may be identified in activities such as journal writing or other first-draft writing.

A writer evolves through developmental stages while engaging in appropriate writing experiences. At each stage, the student needs opportunities to develop through practice and experiments while receiving support and praise. With appropriate experiences, the writer has the potential to progress from the scribbler stage to the expertise of a distinguished author.
