Business as usual, or chaos? In a so-called post-national world, as we have seen, organized and obedient allegiance to the nation, or to any fixed identity, could perhaps become more difficult. Many are tempted to agree with proclamations of the end of grand narrative and the dissolution of all certitude. The nation, however, is resilient in many spheres – there can be few doubts about the military capabilities of the armed state, and the framework of governance and national boundary maintenance still takes quite orthodox forms.
