Specific Learning Difficulties: The Spectrum
This chapter will provide an overview of the range of conditions and characteristics that can be associated with specific learning difficulties (SpLD). It is important to recognize that SpLD can be seen as a spectrum of overlapping difficulties, and most of the syndromes associated with SpLD describe a cluster of difficulties and discrepancies experienced by children.
The purpose of this chapter is therefore to:
- describe some issues relating to the overlapping characteristics within the spectrum of specific learning difficulties;
- discuss the research background in relation to the overlap, or co-association between these difficulties; and
- provide insights into how these syndromes and their specific characteristics can become meaningful for the teacher in terms of identification criteria and intervention ...
