Identifying and unravelling life themes

People's underlying and central life themes are the tenacious and complex themes which emerge again and again in different guises throughout the course of therapy.1 Life themes are associated with people's fixed beliefs, attitudes and behaviours that are deeply embedded in their character structure. Life themes involve a complex system of interrelated patterns of retroflection–introjection–projection (see p. 190) where one belief, attitude or behaviour sustains another and the whole system interferes with people's ability to express themselves, take action or make contact and relationship as they now wish to do. These are themes which often need to be explored repeatedly and systematically.
