Supporting teachers to become more effective

Teachers who are not performing consistently in line with acceptable professional standards will need a programme of structured support, individually tailored, to take account of the individual, immediate and wider-context issues that may have given rise to the under-performance. In this chapter, the ways in which the need for support can be identified will be discussed, together with who should provide the support, and a description of a systematic support process.

Identifying the Need for Support

There are three ways in which the needs of individual teachers for additional support can be identified:

  • self-identification;
  • formal identification; and
  • informal identification.
