With the tremendous increase in reports of sexual crimes in recent years, the problem of sexual violence has never been so clear. Surveys indicate that about one in eight males and one in four females have been sexually assaulted in childhood (e.g., Finkelhor, Hotaling, Lewis, & Smith, 1990), whereas 10% to 25% of women report an adulthood rape experience (e.g., Koss, 1993a).
