The Legal Context of Therapy
The Legal Context of Therapy
The legal system in the United Kingdom is complex and many-sided. The first part of this chapter will offer a brief guide to some of the content and structure of the law, or rather to the main areas likely to be of interest to therapists, such as tort, contract and the responsibilities of service providers. Issues of communicating information, such as data protection and defamation, are then explored. A final section looks at responsibilities relating to service provision and employment regarding employers' liability, criminal records checks and legislation concerning discrimination. The structure of the court system and more practical aspects of going to court or claiming damages are dealt with in Chapter 3.
