The most obvious loss is that of friends and loved ones through death, a loss that is made public by traditional ceremonies of burial and mourning, which, though less formalised than they used to be, still act as ‘rites of passage’ for both the mourners and those mourned. But there are other losses, less publicly recognised, and counsellors need to be aware of their importance.
