The AIDS epidemic is increasingly becoming a crisis for women as well as men in the United States. Women are being infected with HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS, at a faster rate than is any other group of people. As of December 1997, approximately 30.6 million people were living with HIV/AIDS throughout the world. This figure was expected to increase to about 40 million by the year 2000.1 More than 75% of all adult HIV infections have resulted from heterosexual intercourse.2
